Helen Joins Family Law Department
Heptonstalls is pleased to welcome Helen Chapman, who is joining as a solicitor in the successful Family department. Helen joins us after obtaining a BSc in Economics, a LLB and then completing her training with a leading law firm in Hull. She specialises in family law, in particular matrimonial and domestic violence law, and she hopes to help clients in the Goole area through these difficult situations.
Statistics suggest that domestic violence is increasing and now accounts for almost 16% of all violent crimes. We have seen images in the media of domestic violence, usually shown as physical abuse but it is important to be aware that domestic violence can take many forms.
The Government defines domestic violence as any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (be it physical, sexual or emotional) between adults who are or have been in a relationship together, or between family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. Emotional and psychological abuse can often be overlooked and can often be just as painful as physical abuse; therefore a wider understanding of what constitutes domestic violence is needed.
The Legislation that deals with domestic violence in England and Wales provides a number of remedies for victims of abuse including injunctions and occupation orders.
Here at Heptonstalls we are here to advise you on obtaining an injunction or occupation order. We can guide you through the court process and put you in touch with support groups, counsellors and id necessary safe houses.
Every person in this country has the right to protection from all forms of domestic violence. So whether you are young, old, married, unmarried a British citizen or asylum seeker you have the right to ask for help.
Our Family team at Heptontsalls are committed to domestic violence law and we are here to help anyone who finds themselves the victim of domestic violence, please find our contact numbers at the bottom of the page.
